Foreword
This book is our second book showcasing a collection of conversations with experts in the field of trauma. I feel very fortunate to have been provided with the opportunity to be part of these conversations and be able to share the wisdom within with so many of you advocating for children and young people struggling with trauma. Woven throughout Recovery and Resilience at School is the collective belief that schools are not just places of learning, but powerful environments for connection built through considerate and compassionate relationships. Schools are places where “You don’t do trauma informed. Trauma informed is who you are” (Jim Sporleder).
This book comes at a time when educators are navigating increasingly complex challenges in their classrooms and schools. What sets this work apart is its hopeful, strengths-based approach that is grounded in science and driven by empathy with an unwavering belief in the capacity of educators to be agents of change.
Recovery and Resilience at School champions trusted voices in guiding schools toward systems of care, recovery, and resilience. In these pages readers will find contemporary research, practical strategies and resources wrapped in a reminder that children and young people troubled by trauma are unique individuals to be nurtured and grown in a safe and caring environment that tells them they matter and that they are not alone.
Whether you are a teacher, school leader, allied health professional, or policymaker, this book will inform and inspire your practice.
I encourage you to read with curiosity and reflection. Walk confidently and thoughtfully beside children and young people surviving trauma, taking positive steps towards healing and a future of possibilities. They deserve nothing less. The work starts here!
